aesthetic/poetic, linked to the message as auto-reflection,
emotive, associated to the sender’ self-expression,
conative, associated to the receiver that takes part to the communication by reacting,
phatic, connected to the channel that transfers the message,
metalingual, linked to the code shared between sender and receiver that allows the production of meaning.
Observing the game as a means to convey meanings, it is evident the parallelism between the structure of our verbal communication and how such games work (Mariani 2016). Hence, merging the reasoning on Shannon–Weaver’s and Jakobson’s communication models and adapting it to games, we can associate to each of these functions an element that characterizes how games work as systems that communicate conveying meanings.
Figure 5.3 represents how the game designer (1) aims to transfer (2) a message to the player (4) who decodes (6) it. In the model, the game is used as a (5) channel, and its rules and mechanics are the elements through which meanings are embedded and conveyed. Namely, they are in charge of the (3) transmission of the message. Then, this entire process happens within a socio-cultural (7) context that influences the way the player reads the game and interprets its elements and messages. This is due to the fact that the player, as an individual, negotiates the meanings embedded in the game relying on his or her personal and cultural background (see Sect. 4.2).
